The emu is a species of flightless bird endemic to Australia, where it is the tallest native bird. It is the only extant member of the genus Dromaius and the third-tallest living bird after its African ratite relatives, the common ostrich and Somali ostrich.
Like other birds of their kind, all ratites are territorial of their young and their eggs. Females lay eggs the male will incubate and watch over primarily. The family unit might stick together for the duration of the season, but the female may move on to lay eggs for the next male. They make loud noises to protect their territory from unwanted visitors or unusual objects they will "boom" and grunt as well.
Buying Healthy EMU Chicks
We are open and generous in helping you gain the knowledge you need to keep these magestic birds thriving;
letting them know set-up requirements, such as minimum enclosure measurements and fencing requirements, dietary needs, etc, and we will offer ongoing help if needed.
It is hoped that people have previously studied their requirements beforehand, but it's best to make sure; for the birds health and safety, the new owners peace of mind, and the reputation of Emu keeping in general.
We don't just sell these birds to anyone who send interests but i undergo an interview to learn your level of experienced because its important to know the temperament of the bird(s) you are buying, to make sure he/she will fit with your already established mob.
We always make sure our bird(s) are sexed before we even advertise them.
Transportation (Car or Trailer)
Adults Emu will need a livestock trailer or horsebox with a fully covered back door. Young will fit in the boot of an estate car with a dog guard.
They tend to sit down as soon as they get moving, so be sure to have plenty of hay and straw down, a couple of bales worth in a livestock trailer, to make a thick non-slip bed, keeping in mind that emu legs splay easy, so any slippery floors will need to be covered completely. A lot of deep straw will give them a secure bed which they wont roll around on.
It is wise to keep them in the dark whilst travelling, keeping them calm, so put a blanket or cover over their crate, allowing for air flow.
